Dr Cafer's most-prescribed medications

It was interesting to browse ProPublica provider checkup to see the rank-order of medications I prescribe to Medicare patients. It was no surprise that trazodone was number one. I was surprised to see Ambien on the list with 63 scripts because it is really not one of my favorites. It seems unlikely that I prescribe more clozapine than olanzapine (Zyprexa)--this may be an artifact of clozapine being dispensed in 7-day supplies early on, plus we've got two different formulations of olanzapine (which if combined would rank olanzapine #3). The purple "P" stands for antipsychotic.

Note that every medication on the list is available generically. Most of these are within the realm of affordability even for patients without insurance, if they bring the right GoodRx coupon to the right pharmacy (which can vary from drug to drug). If paying cash without GoodRx you will get ripped off at most places.

For instance olanzapine 10 mg #30 is only $9 at Walmart and Schnucks, no coupon needed. Go to Walgreens and the same bottle of pills is $585 without GoodRx coupon, $182 with. Compare this to Hy Vee, where it is $13 with a coupon vs $320 without. All of these prices are on GoodRx.com.
